music for pleasure

Musical ability is not limited to sight-reading and the passing of examinations! The arts of improvisation, composition, arrangement and transcription are also key to a well-rounded experience of music.

Improvisation: on-the-spot creation of music, often alongside other musicians. Improv’ is a fundamental aspect of many traditions including jazz, rock and folk.

Composition: the process of writing original music and organising its various musical elements.

Arrangement: adapting a piece of music (e.g. its harmony or rhythm) to create a new version or interpretation of the original composition.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT ME

“Alex is a truly gifted musician who brings his own character to every instrument he chooses to master. It’s a pleasure to play with him and even more of a pleasure to listen to him. His enthusiasm to play and do more is inspirational."

Levi Saxelby, AMV Music, House Of Sax

“Alex is undoubtedly one of the most talented musicians I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. He has the perfect blend of talent, skill, professionalism and sense of humour making him an asset in any musical setting, be it live or in the studio. His extensive knowledge of wind and brass instruments make him a fantastic sectional arranger who has some fantastic recordings of many projects he’s arranged for under his belt."

Ben Helm, Guitarist and Teacher

“I always look forward to my lessons with Alex - we have a lot of fun and he lets me steer the direction of my learning according to my own personal music tastes and goals. He’s both patient and knowledgable, and is himself incredibly talented and inspiring as a musician. My confidence both musically and personally has inspired massively over the past few years thanks to him, and he will frequently go above and beyond to support me. Alex is not only a brilliant teacher, but has grown to be a good friend as well.”

Emily, saxophone student

“Alex is a tremendous teacher. Since I started learning saxophone, he has taught me to play, taught me to read music, and taught me to compose songs. His knowledge and skill are evident and his lessons are always fun and engaging, and always fly by. I’d highly recommend him if you are looking to learn to play.”
